Why is the WordDive Method so effective? »

Every study item in the main exercise is followed by an example. By reading and listening to the example, you will learn grammatical constructions and typical phrases as well as new words and pronunciation.

In the beginning, you can focus on learning words.

Once the words feel familiar, start paying attention to the examples.

With WordDive you learn a new language by using it. Relax and repeat the examples even if you don't understand everything.

When you can say ”Una taza de té, por favor” ("A cup of tea, please”) in Spanish and you know the word ”el café” (coffee), you can also say: ”Una taza de café, por favor.”

When you study languages on your own, it becomes increasingly important to have feedback and a way to monitor your own progress. WordDive has created a unique tool that makes it extremely easy for you to observe how you are advancing in your language studies.

Language-specific Quick Guides

If you are studying Russian, Japanese or Chinese, the language-specific quick guide will help you to get started. It includes instructions for installing writing system support. Choose your language by clicking on the flag.

Supported Systems

WordDive can be used with any PC (Windows, Mac or Linux) connected to the Internet. The supported browsers are:

In general, newer versions of a browser work better, excluding possible beta releases.

Mobile devices (pads, mobile phones with browsers) work better all the time. There is no official list of supported devices yet, but you can try the following:

  1. Activate a free course ( and try it.
  2. A normal course will work similarly in your device. There are no technical differences between free and normal courses.

Troubleshooting: Force Reload

If exercises do not work or there are other problems with the website, try loading the latest version of the page as follows:

Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or Google Chrome

  1. Go to the page where the problem is.
  2. Hold the Ctrl key down and press F5 at the same time.

Apple Safari

  1. Go to the page where the problem is.
  2. Hold the Shift key down and click the Reload icon at the same time.
Safari force reload

If force reloading does not fix the problem, try another supported browser.

Different answer levels

WordDive recognizes several different answer levels, which the system uses to determine how well you know the study item you are practicing. In addition, it recognizes previous repetitions, time since the repetitions and your general learning history.

Fully Correct

  • + Exactly right
  • + Full "points"

The study item is stored exactly right in your short term memory. Great! You have achieved at least the Known level.

If necessary, the item will be practiced some more until it is in your long term memory and reaches the Permanent level.

Almost Correct

  • + Small mistake, e.g. qué/que (accent mark) or Tuesday/tuesday (capital letter)
  • + Almost full "points"

You probably know this already, but need to be a bit more precise. Some more practice will make it just right and leave the fully correct spelling in your long term memory.

A Permanent status will stay, but to reach it, at least one Fully Correct answer is needed. You may reach the Known or Permanent level depending on your previous practice.

Correct by Listening

  • + Answer was fully or almost correct after listening
  • + Some "points"

The answer comes at least partially from your short term memory and can't be used to determine whether it is already in your long term memory.

The study item will be repeated some more to strengthen the connection between the picture, the word and your memory. Your skills will increase even if the level does not change. If you like, you can listen to the item several times before answering.

Good Try

  • + Answer was mostly correct, or
  • + Answer fits the situation but was not the one we were looking for
  • + A few "points".

You have the right idea of the word in your mind, it just did not come out perfectly yet. The answer is written again immediately so that the last thing you remember will be the correct form.

Your skills will increase slightly, but you won't reach a new level. Possible level loss depends on your learning history.

  • + Empty Answer field or none of the above
  • + No "points"

You have the right idea, but either answered with a related word or your answer did not come out perfectly yet. The answer is written again immediately so that the last thing you remember will be correct.

Your skills will increase slightly, but you won't reach a new level. Possible level loss depends on your learning history.

The best way to practice

Because breaks and especially sleep will empty your short term memory, you will get the best results by practicing for short periods of time, but often. Half an hour every day of the week gives much better results than two hours on two days of the week.

If you don't know or can't guess the answer, try these:

  1. Translate
    • You can translate the answer at any time without affecting the "points" you get.
    • Translating tells you what exactly the item you are learning means. It is especially recommended if you have seen the picture several times and still can't tell what it represents.
    • However, it is not recommended to use Translate every time. Using Translate only when it is necessary has the benefit of making you think more and more in the language you are studying. If you are an advanced student, you may want to change the user interface to your target language as well.
  2. Listen
    • Learning by listening and writing will enhance your language skills quickly. It can also give you Correct by listening "points".
  3. Guess
    • If you can think of something that might fit, write that in the Answer field.
    • Learning is largely a subconscious process. Let your subconscious roam and write the answer that comes to your mind without thinking too much. After only a few repetitions, you will be able to learn even the most difficult words.
  4. Look at the answer
    • See the correct answer by clicking Try.

The WordDive method is based on forming a strong connection between the picture and the study item in the long term memory. Repetition is essential for establishing this connection. For this reason, you will learn much more by listening to or looking at the answer after a few seconds than spending a long time pondering it. Relaxing and letting go bring the best results.

Though we are constantly improving the study items, all of them can't be answered correctly on the first try. This is not the intended goal either. The most important function of the first few tries is to connect the picture you see and the word you are practicing.

Soon you will find that the picture brings the word to your mind directly in the target language, not in your native language. This way, you learn to think and act in the target language, which is the most natural way to learn and quickly leads to better language skills than the traditional, native language-based way of studying.

Even if you don't understand everything, listen to the voice models and repeat them aloud. Listening and speaking strengthens the image further in your memory and speeds up your learning.

Using WordDive when you are very tired is not recommended. Intensive studying just before bedtime can also make it difficult to fall asleep.

Parts of speech

The point of the icons is to give a hint about the part of speech of the study item. There are small differences in how parts of speech are taught in different languages, but on a general level, these are the ones used:

Part of speech

  1. It is not necessary to know all the parts of speech when starting to study a new language. This is why smaller parts of speech have been combined. Here is a short description for those who are interested:
    • Adverb modifies the verb or the whole sentence. Typically, an adverb describes time, place, reason, manner or method.
    • Particles are function words (such as yet, however, anyway). In WordDive, interjections (hi, hello) are included in expressions, even though they are particles as well.
    • Adposition expresses the relation of a thing or being to another thing or being. An adposition that comes before its complement is called a preposition (before Monday) and an adposition that comes after its complement is called a postposition (the storm last night).
  2. Character, abbreviation, expression and grammar are not officially parts of speech. They are specific to the WordDive service and are meant to facilitate learning.

All settings have practical default values, so you can get started without paying them any attention. However, after studying for a while, you might want to adjust the settings to suit your learning preferences better.

Click the Settings tab and adjust the settings as you like. There is a brief description of the functions of every control, but you can also experiment freely with different settings and find the ones that work best for you. You cannot break anything by changing the settings and none of your results will be lost. Just go ahead and find your own learning style.

Listen first

When you do not know the answer or answer incorrectly, the correct answer will be shown to you. This is the easiest way to learn to use the service.

listen first

When you have gotten off to a good start, we recommend changing the First empty answer setting to Listen to answer on the Settings tab. This way you will only hear the correct answer after the first empty answer, but you will not see it written. Answering on the basis of what you heard will make learning more effective and give you Correct by Listening points. After the second empty answer, the correct answer will be shown just like before.
