Verb theme

Typically, irregular verbs have a feature like a vowel change (begin began begun) or do not change at all in different tenses (cut cut cut).

For learning these verbs, the essential thing is to remember that apart from the change they follow a regular pattern. When you remember the three tenses, it is easy to form the rest. For example:

Present tensecomeseewatch
Simple pastcamesawwatched
Past participlecomeseenwatched

These three tenses form the verb theme: for example, see saw seen.

Conjugating the verb with the theme

In English, all tenses and aspects of a verb can be derived easily from its theme.

The following is an example of the simple present of the verb "see" formed on the basis of the theme. Simple present describes things that happen at the moment or in general.

Simple present (from present tense "see")

I see

you see

he/she sees

we see

you see

they see
